CATEGORIES

  1. SPOT NEWS—A picture of an unscheduled event for which no planning was possible.
  2. GENERAL NEWS—A picture of a scheduled event for which planning was possible.
  3. FEATURES—Usually a “found” situation that has strong human interest. A fresh view of the commonplace.
  4. SPORTS ACTION—A picture that captures the competitive spirit of a sporting event.
  5. SPORTS FEATURE—A sports-related picture with strong human interest.
  6. PORTRAIT/PERSONALITY—A picture that captures an aspect of the subject’s character.
  7.  NEWS PICTURE STORY—A multiple picture presentation limited to 12 pictures, which are presented in order. A story based on daily coverage of events. Each entry must be summarized in a single paragraph in the FILE INFO caption field of the first photograph.
  8. FEATURE PICTURE STORY—A multiple picture presentation limited to 12 pictures, which are presented in order. A candid story or essay that celebrates life. Each entry must be summarized in a single paragraph in the FILE INFO caption field of the first photograph.
  9.  Best “Mobile Device Photo.” A single image shot and edited on any type of mobile device. The image may use a filter commonly used with camera phone photography but an image’s content may not be directly manipulated. Cannot be entered in any other category.
  10.  BEST MINI-DOC MULTIMEDIA PACKAGE (LONGER THAN 2.5 MINUTES) — This category highlights the use of photographic storytelling, audio, video, and animation in the presentation of web-based stories of over 2.5 minutes. Judges will pay special attention to the use of available technology to complement and enhance the art of visual storytelling. Content, usability, and interactivity will also be evaluated to judge the best Multimedia Package entry. Each photographer is allowed it enter a maximum of three multimedia packages.
    A. Web site entrants must submit a working URL for each entry. E-mail URL links to: sfbappacontest@gmail.com.
    B. URL’s that are not active during the judging will be disqualified. (Please read Legal Statements below)
    C. Television photographers are eligible to enter this category as long as their piece is shown on the television’s web site.
    D. YouTube pieces are eligible.

  12.  STUDENT DIVISION — First place: The Greg Robinson Memorial Award. Second place: The Luci S. Williams Houston Memorial Award. A third place prize will also be awarded.
  13.  PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR — The Ken McLaughlin Award.
  • No more than 20 entries, totaling no more than 80 photos, may be entered as a portfolio. Picture stories count as a single entry. No multimedia packages.
  • A portfolio must include entries from at least four of the single categories (1-6), one of which must be
  • "SPOT NEWS" or "GENERAL NEWS."
  •  Entries may be color or black and white.
  • Portfolio entries must be in its own folder entitled “POY.”
  • Portfolios will not be broken down for judging in individual categories. You must provide a separate entry.
  • The "PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR" category will be judged first, with the non-winning entries to be judged in the general competition.
  • The "PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR" may not win in any other category.
  • Only photographs (published or unpublished) taken during 2013 will be considered.
  • A picture story that is shot in more than one year may be entered in either year but not both.
  • The competition is only open to SFBAPPA members in good standing. If you are not a member in good standing, please fill out the enclosed membership application and submit dues at time of entry.

STUDENT ENTRY RULES

The Greg Robinson Memorial Award is named after San Francisco Examiner photographer Greg Robinson who was killed while on assignment in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978. The Luci S. Williams Houston Memorial Award is given in memory of San Jose Mercury News photojournalist Luci S. Williams Houston who was murdered in November 2001. The Awards are given annually by SFBAPPA to the most promising photojournalist among full-time students from a junior college or university in the greater Bay Area. It is recommended that students enter a portfolio that shows their strengths in the areas of news, feature, sports, portrait/personality, pictorial and picture stories. Entries will be judged on technical ability, versatility and personal vision.

STUDENT ENTRY RULES:

  1. Deadline for entries is Friday, February 7, 2014.
  2. There are no other categories in Category 12, the student contest. It is a portfolio competition.
  3. Entrants should submit a portfolio of no more than 20 black and white or color entries. Picture stories count as a single.
  4. Only photographs taken during 2013 will be considered. A picture story that is shot in more than one year may be entered in either year, but not both.
  5. The competition is only open to SFBAPPA student members in good standing. However, if you are not a student member in good standing, please fill out the enclosed membership application and submit dues at time of entry.
  6. There is no entry fee for the student contest. However a $20 SFBAPPA membership fee is required. Student membership fees can also be paid using PayPal or credit card on the SFBAPPA web site: www.sfbappa.org. If any student has a financial hardship, please contact contest director.
  7.  All decisions of the judges will be final.
  8. The judges reserve the right to withhold awards if the entries do not meet their standards.
  9. Submit RGB photo files only at 72 dpi with a width or height no greater than 15 inches. The JPEG should be saved at “Maximum,” or a value of 8 to 10.
  10. The photographs may have originally been shot on film or with a digital camera. No slide or print entries will be accepted.
  11. Each photo must have a lowercase file name. The name must include the number of the photo in the category, three initials of photographer, student category number, and a mandatory suffix “.jpg” at the end. Example: Number the photo submitted in Student Division (1); Doug Digital Duran (ddd); Student Division (14) and mandatory suffix “.jpg” = 1ddd14.jpg
  12. Entrant must fill out name, address, phone number, affiliation, three letter initials and category of entry on the enclosed “Entry Form.” The "Entry Form" can also be mailed; Word File (.txt preferred) can be included inside .zip file; or emailed to contest director: sfbappacontest@gmail.com
  13. Captions:
    A. In Adobe Photoshop use "File Info" or in Photo Mechanic use "IPTC Info" or "IPTC Stationery." Do not use any other caption plug-ins.
    B. Photo caption (inside Caption or Description field)

    D. Your school (inside Credit or Provider field)
    E. Your E-mail address (inside Special Instructions or Instruction field)
    F. Your three-letter initials (inside Writers or Description Writer field)

  14. To enter via online, please use an online file sharing site and email your uploaded files link to Contest Chairman Doug Duran at sfbappacontest@gmail.com. If you have not ever used an online sharing service, we recommend using GE.TT. Simply enter “ge.tt” into your web browser and follow their instructions to upload a zip file with your entry from their website. Follow the detailed instructions below about how to prepare your entry and upload:
    A. After you have edited and captioned your photos, create a folder with your name, i.e. “Doug Digital Duran”
    B. Then inside that folder create separate folders for each of the categories that you are entering, i.e. “Features”
    C. Each separate “Picture Story” must have a separate folder, i.e. “News Picture Story 1”
    D. Then place your photos in the appropriate category.
    E. Entrant must fill out name, address, phone number, affiliation, three letter initials and categories of entry on the enclosed “Entry Form" and make into Word File (txt preferred).
    F. Then make a .zip of the folder that has your name, ie. "Doug Digital Duran." To make a .zip file for Mac: right click the specific folder and select "Compress." To make a .zip file for PC: right click folder, select "Send To" and select "Compressed (zipped) Folder."
    G. Make sure your .zip file is no larger that 100 megabytes.
    H. Log into any online file sharing service that provides an online link to download the file. We suggest ge.tt.
    I. Follow website instructions and upload file to sharing service.
    J. After upload is complete, copy the provided link for your contest entry file and email to sfbappacontest@gmail.com. Make sure to label the email with the subject containing your full name and "Annual Contest Entry. For example, "Doug  Digital Duran's Annual Contest Entry."
    K. If you are unable to upload an entry online, please contact SFBAPPA Contest Director: sfbappacontest@gmail.com

Judges comments: It was a pleasure to judge the work. Several categories (features and sports) had many strong entries. In general news, our collective bias was toward photographs conveying strong emotion. Portrait/illustration was by far the most difficult category and generated a long discussion to arrive at the winners. Several otherwise good pictures stories were diminished in impact because of a lack of tight editing.
