36th Annual News Photography Competition Rules
Deadline for receipt of entry: 5 p.m., Friday, February 5, 2010.
Please take the time to read the rules thoroughly, as they have changed from previous years.
Awards Banquet: April 2010
CATEGORIES
1. SPOT NEWS — A picture of an unscheduled event for which no planning was possible.
2. GENERAL NEWS — A picture of a scheduled event for which planning was possible.
3. FEATURES — Usually a “found” situation that has strong human interest. A fresh view of the commonplace.
4. SPORTS ACTION — A picture that captures the competitive spirit of a sporting event.
5. SPORTS FEATURE — A sports-related picture with strong human interest.
6. PORTRAIT/PERSONALITY — A picture that captures an aspect of the subject’s character.
7. NEWS PICTURE STORY — A multiple picture presentation of two minutes or less and limited to 12 pictures, which are presented in order. A story based on daily coverage of events. Each entry must be summarized in a single paragraph in the FILE INFO caption field of the first photograph.
8. FEATURE PICTURE STORY — A multiple picture presentation of over two minutes and limited to 12 pictures, which are presented in order. A candid story or essay that celebrates life. Each entry must be summarized in a single paragraph in the FILE INFO caption field of the first photograph.
9. BEST MINI-DOC MULTIMEDIA PACKAGE (LONGER THAN 2.5 MINUTES) — This category highlights the use of photographic storytelling, audio, video, and animation in the presentation of web-based stories of over 2.5 minutes. Judges will pay special attention to the use of available technology to complement and enhance the art of visual storytelling. Content, usability, and interactivity will also be evaluated to judge the best Multimedia Package entry. Each photographer is allowed it enter a maximum of three multimedia packages.

10. BEST SHORT MULTIMEDIA PIECE (2.5 MINUTES OR SHORTER) — This category highlights the use of photographic storytelling, audio, video, and animation in the presentation of web-based stories of 2.5 minutes or shorter. Judges will pay special attention to the use of available technology to complement and enhance the art of visual storytelling. Content, usability, and interactivity will also be evaluated to judge the best Multimedia Package entry. Each photographer is allowed it enter a maximum of three multimedia packages.

11. STUDENT DIVISION — First place: The Greg Robinson Memorial Award. Second place: The Luci S. Williams Houston Memorial Award. A third place award will be given.
12. PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR — The Ken McLaughlin Award.
POY RULES:
1. No more than 20 entries, totaling no more than 80 photos, may be entered as a portfolio. Picture stories count as a single entry. No multimedia packages.
2. A portfolio must include entries from at least four of the single categories (1-6), one of which must be "SPOT NEWS" or "GENERAL NEWS."
3. Entries may be color or black and white. Portfolio entries must be in its own folder entitled “POY.”
4. Portfolios will not be broken down for judging in individual categories. You must provide a separate entry.
5. The "PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR" category will be judged first, with the non-winning entries to be judged in the general competition.
6. The "PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR" may not win in any other category.
ELIGIBILITY
1. Only photographs/multimedia pieces (published or unpublished) taken during 2009 will be considered.
2. A picture story that is shot in more than one year may be entered in either year but not both.
3. The competition is only open to SFBAPPA members in good standing. If you are not a member in good standing, please fill out the enclosed membership application and submit dues at time of entry.
RULES FOR ENTERING
1. Each entrant must enclose a $25 entry fee. You can pay my mail, credit card or PayPal on www.sfbappa.org (Your entries will not be judged unless the fee is included. If anyone has a financial hardship and wants to enter, please contact contest director.)
2. No more than 20 entries may be submitted. A "PICTURE STORY" entry is considered one entry.
3. A picture may not be entered in more than one category, with the exception of the "PICTURE STORY" which may be entered in one other single category.
4. All decisions of the judges will be final.
5. The judges reserve the right to withhold awards in any category if the entries do not meet their standards.
6. No slide or print entries will be accepted.
7. The photographs may have originally been shot on film or with a digital camera.
8. Captions:
A. In Adobe Photoshop use "File Info" or in Photo Mechanic use "IPTC Info" or "IPTC Stationary". Do not use any other caption plug-ins.
B. Photo caption (inside Caption or Description field)
C. Your name (inside Photographer or Author or Creator field)
D. Your affiliation (inside Credit or Provider field)
E. Your E-mail address (inside Special Instructions or Instruction field)
F. Your three-letter initials (inside Writers or Description Writer field)
9. Submit RGB photo files only at 72 dpi with a width or height no greater than 10 inches. The JPEG should be saved at "Maximum".
10. Each photo must have a lowercase file name. The name must include the category number, three initials of the photographer, number of photo in the category, and a mandatory suffix ".jpg" at the end. Example: Spot News (1) Doug Digital Duran (ddd) Number the photo submitted in Spot News (1) and mandatory suffix ".jpg" = 1ddd1.jpg
11. Entrant must fill out name, address, phone number, an affiliation, three letter initials and categories of entry on the enclosed “Entry Form". "Entry Form" can either be mailed to address below; Word File (.txt preferred) can be included inside .zip file; or emailed to contest director: sfbappacontest@gmail.com
12. Entries can now be entered via FTP.

A. After you have edited and captioned your photos, create a folder with your name, ie. "Doug Digital Duran"
B. Then inside that folder create separate folders for each of the categories that you are entering, ie. "Feature"
C. Each separate "Picture Story" must have a separate folder, ie. "News Picture Story 1"
D. Then place your photos in the appropriate category.
E. Entrant must fill out name, address, phone number, affiliation, three letter initials and categories of entry on the enclosed “Entry Form" and make into Word File. Word File .txt preferred.
F. Then make a .zip of the folder that has your name, ie. "Doug Digital Duran".
To make a .zip file for Mac: right click the specific folder and select "Compression".
To make a .zip file for PC: right click folder, select "Send To" and select "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
G. Make sure your .zip file is no larger that 50 Megabytes.
H. Log into www.sfbappa.org/contest with the username "sfbappa" and the password "contest"
I. Hit the "Choose File" button under "Upload Files" on this page.
J. Find the zip file on your hard drive and select it.
K. Finally hit the "Upload" button and a few minutes later you should see the .zip file listed under the "Files" section of the page.
L. If you do not see your .zip file (ie. Doug Digital Duran.zip) on "Files" section of page, contact SFBAPPA Contest Director: sfbappacontest@gmail.com
13. You can still enter a CD.
A. Print your full name, three letter code, affiliation and phone number clearly on CD. You also can use the "Optional CD Cover" below.
B. SFBAPPA reserves the right to disqualify any CD or Folder that is unreadable, defective or found to contain a virus or other suspicious files.
C. Complete "Entry Form" and mail it with CD at the address below.
D. If you mail in a CD, files can be Mac or PC format. However, the Mac format is preferred.
E. Submit photos in folders on CD entitled SPOT NEWS, GENERAL NEWS, FEATURES, SPORTS ACTION, SPORTS FEATURE, PORTRAIT/PERSONALITY, NEWS PICTURE STORY, FEATURE PICTURE STORY, PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (POY) and STUDENT (POY). Group all photo stories together into one folder with each story having its own folder.

AWARDS: Plaques, certificates or cash awards will be given in each category. A perpetual trophy, plaque and cash award will be given to the Photographer of the year.
AWARDS BANQUET: Winners will be announced and shown at the SFBAPPA Awards Banquet in April. Further details will be announced by mail.

Any unpublished images which were created while on assignment for a specific publisher and which are being entered in the Still Photo division of the SFBAPPA News Photo contest have either been published already, or been approved for inclusion in the SFBAPPA News Photo contest by my supervisor.
I give permission to the SFBAPPA for the use of my entry material in the exhibition, the SFBAPPA Web sites, Awards Banquet and for the promotion of SFBAPPA and its activities, without any remuneration.
STUDENT CONTEST:
The Greg Robinson Memorial Award is named after San Francisco Examiner photographer Greg Robinson who was killed while on assignment in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978.
The Luci S. Williams Houston Memorial Award is given in memory of San Jose Mercury News photojournalist Luci S. Williams Houston who was murdered in November 2001.
The Awards are given annually by SFBAPPA to the most promising photojournalist among full-time students from a junior college or university in the greater Bay Area. It is recommended that students enter a portfolio that shows their strengths in the areas of news, feature, sports, portrait/personality, pictorial and picture stories. Entries will be judged on technical ability, versatility and personal vision. Winners will receive a camera, cash and/or plaque.
STUDENT ENTRY RULES:
1. Deadline for entries is Friday, February 5, 2010. Entries must be delivered by 5 P.M.
2. There are no other categories in Category 11, the student contest. It is a portfolio competition.
3. Entrants should submit a portfolio of no more than 20 black and white or color entries. Picture stories count as a single entry.
4. Only photographs piece taken during 2009 will be considered. A picture story that is shot in more than one year may be entered in either year, but not both.
5. The competition is only open to SFBAPPA student members in good standing. If you are not a student member in good standing, please fill out the enclosed membership application and submit dues at time of entry.
6. There is no entry fee for the student contest. Total student cost is a $20 SFBAPPA membership fee. Student membership fees can also be paid using PayPal or credit card on the SFBAPPA web site: www.sfbappa.org If any student has a financial hardship, please contact contest director.
