A firefighter extinguishes flames from a big-rig truck that crashed into the south steps of the California state Capitol and burst into flames on Tuesday, January 16, 2001. The driver was killed in the crash, which took place just as the Assembly was adjourning for the night after approving a plan to ease the state's energy crisis. The registered driver of the truck is believed to be a 37-year old parolee from who had a long-standing grudge against Gov. Gray Davis.

Collette Turner, 83, had to relocate after her low income housing was sold to a developer four years ago. Many of the Section 8 housing projects are being lost, as their government leases are now up. Her new home is not as convenient to downtown and she is still getting used to it. Items like her portrait of her hero, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, along with much needed coupons are still in boxes.
